• Did the author present good evidence to support his/her points or opinions?
• What was the style and tone and how did it serve the purpose? If the reader or listener is supposed to be very afraid of something, was that purpose achieved? If the reader or viewer is being called to action, did you want to take that action? This all goes to the idea of effectiveness.

Once you have gathered your thoughts about the piece, you just need to organize them and then write a solid, academically worthy reaction piece. Easy, right? Well maybe not so much if you are addressing a piece which is complex, difficult to understand, or just plain boring. Then, it’s time so say, “Somebody else can just do this for me.”
