Cover Letter Writing
Your Cover Letter Matters
Your cover letter is the opportunity to introduce yourself to potential employers. It is also your potential employer’ first chance to judge you. If you have a great cover letter, the person reading it will be eager to read your resume as soon as they finish. If your cover letter fails to impress, your resume may not even receive a glance, or, at best, 15 seconds. (That’s what the research says).
How Do You Write the Perfect Cover Letter?
Your cover letter, just like your resume, should be customized for each potential employer. Specifically addressing the cover letter to the person you wish to read your cover letter is an important first step, but it is not the only one. You also need to consider the tone of your letter. For example, you would use a different tone if you were applying with a job at a Fortune 500 company than you would if you were applying to a new tech start-up owned by 20-something entrepreneurs. Then there are matters of style and formatting, spelling, and grammar, and probably most important, what you should include in your cover letter versus what should be saved for your resume.
